Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris, born October 20, 1964 was a prominent American politician as well as a lawyer. She is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official in U.S. history, as well as the first African American and first Asian American vice president. As a member of the Democratic Party, she previously was the attorney general for California between 2011 and 2017 and as a United States senator representing California from 2017 until 2021. Harris was born and raised in Oakland, California. After establishing her career as an Alameda County District Attorney Harris was hired to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In the following years, she was the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003, she was elected the district attorney of San Francisco. She was appointed Attorney General of California in 2010, and was she was re-elected in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the second African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. As a senator she advocated healthcare reform, federal descheduling of cannabis, a path for undocumented immigrants to become citizens and the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. She also supported progressive tax reform. Her name is well-known due to the direct questioning she conducted of Trump government officials in Senate hearings.
